Por es una preposición, indica la causa de una cosa. Por es "a través", indica un medio.
Para es una preposición también, indica varias relaciones: Término de un movimiento "salió para un sitio"; Término de un transcurso de tiempo "tendrás tu juguete para Navidad"; Duración "alquilar un coche para una semana", y se puede decir "alquilar un coche por una semana"; Destino "este regalo es para tu hermana"

well we generally use por as "by" I mean I did this by myself... "hice esto POR mi mismo"
and para its most of the time the same as "for" This letter is for you "esta carta es PARA ti"

"Por" and "para" are bound to be difficult, since both map to "for" in English. (It's the same case as "in" and "on", both of which map to "en" in Spanish.)

Both "por" and "para" are prepositions. "Para" is used to introduce an indirect object, i.e. the receiver of something. "Por" is used pretty much in every other case where you'd use "for" in English.

Well, the difference is that "por" precedes the cause of something, and "para" precedes the effect. It's the difference between cause and effect. So, you can translate "por" for "because of", and "para" for "for".
For exmaple: I brought a car to reach earlier at work. Me compré un coche para llegar antes al trabajo.
O, con "por": Why do you feel ill?. Because of the meal I ate. ¿Por qué te sientes mal?. Por la comida que comí.

But "Por" is also used whit other meanings. For example, through: I see through the window. Veo por la ventana. ( Or: Veo a través de la ventana).
