That's what I thought when I started learning English...
It depends on where you live and what language you speak. The french might say the same, because, there are some french words in it, too.
English is a mixture of different ancient languages (as most languages are). Some celtic, saxon (germanic) and scandinavian (also germanic). After the norman (Scandinavians who have been a bit french at that time) invasion those brought a portion of medieval french with them.
Most languages in this area use words descending from ancient greek and, first of all: latin. The 'roman' languages in Italy, Romania, Spain, Portugal and France more than others.
Many european languages are related and a lot of words sound familiar. That makes learning easier than studying completely unrelated languages (like chinese). But sometimes they are used and written in a different way.
So, again, you have to learn them all...
