Why do they have "der", "die", and "das" in the German language?

Why don't they just have one word like "the"?

Ich glaube, du musst sie alle einzeln lernen. Es ist wie mit den chinesischen Zähleinheitswörtern (量词). Die musst du auch zu jedem Wort lernen. Wenn du nicht das richtige wählst, klingt es etwas falsch... Schreib (/Schreibe) bei jedem neuen Wort, das du lernst immer dazu, ob es "der", "die" oder "das" ist.

I'm afraid you have to learn them all, one by one. It's the same with the chinese measure words (量词). These you also have to learn together with their particular words. If you don't choose the correct one it sounds a little wrong... Make a note with every new word if it's a 'der'-, 'die'- or 'das'-word.

Hello Tiffeny! I know it is complecated to learn "der, die, das". It is a way to differ if something is male (der Mann - the man) or female (die Frau - the woman) or neuter (das Buch - the book). It is necessary to study if things are male, female or neuter. For example the moon is male in German (der Mond). I hope I could help you just a little bit. Liebe Grüße Coco

Hello Tiffany ,
Why ? It could be partly a classification of feminine ,masculine and neutral objects and persons ,
such as ( der Mann , die Frau ) , ( der Sohn , die Tochter ) ( das Buch , das Kind) but it is not always a rule for some words dont really follow that rule ,so you have to learn them as they are in many cases without a particular reason .
