They all are mostly used in written Korean.
합니다
1. With a ‘ㅇㅇ하다(a basic form of most Korean verbs)’-shaped verb → ㅇㅇ합니다
운동하다 exercise → 운동합니다 I exercise.
좋아하다 like → 좋아합니다 I like.
애매하다 be vague → 애매합니다. It's vague.
2. With a ‘ㅇㅇ한’-shaped adjective → ㅇㅇ합니다.
For example : 따뜻한 warm + 합니다. → 따뜻합니다. It's warm.
시원한 cool + 합니다. → 시원합니다. It's cool.
행복한 happy + 합니다. → Guess what?
3. With a noun
공부 study + 합니다. → 공부합니다. I study.
요리 cooking + 합니다. → 요리합니다. I cook.
밥 a meal or rice + 합니다. → 밥 합니다. I cook rice.
영화 the movie + 합니다. → 영화 합니다. The movie shows.
축구 football + 합니다. → 축구 합니다. I play football or A football game is on TV.
영어 English + 합니다. → 영어 합니다. I speak English.
There will be some nouns can't be with 합니다.
습니다.
It's used With the past form of a verb
피곤하다 be tired : 피곤했다 → 피곤했습니다. I was tired.
덥다 be hot : 더웠다 → 더웠습니다. It was hot.
아름답다 be beautiful : 아름다웠다 → 아름다웠습니다. It was beautiful.
웃기다 funny : 웃겼다 be funny → 웃겼습니다. It was funny.
입니다.
It's used with a noun.
I'm Korean. 한국인입니다. It's Cheese. 치즈입니다. It's June. 6월입니다.

조금 보태자면, '습니다'는 과거, 현재, 미래 모두 쓸 수 있습니다. 그리고 구어(spoken language)에도 쓸 수 있습니다.
