A refusing english problem,could you help me?

Mr.Smith told his students that Edison —— the electric light.
A.invents B.invented

I think the "B" is right,but others said "A"is right and meanwhile some people said the both are right.It really confused me,could you tell me the right answer?wait for your opinions,thank you very much!

'Invented' is the correct answer. Because we are talking about something done in the past we need to use past tense, which is 'invented'.
'Invents' is in present tense, which is something someone is doing now, not something they have done before. Edison invented the electric light many years ago: he isn't inventing it right now, so we use past tense.

The answer is B. invented

Words with an "ed" on the end of it are normally what we call a "past tense," meaning it is something that happened earlier in life, not recently.
