Dear friend, according to my experience Chinese characters are difficult for Westen people, but many of them learnt well. The suggestions as followed:

1. Radicals. Usually I teach my students according to the radicals, because radicals are very very important for learning characters, and each radical has their own meaning. If you manage the radical meanings, you could make guess the characters meaning even you havn't learnt before. They are like prefix and suffix in English, they are the tool which you enlarge your characters vocabulary. You could choose some typical characters of one radical to learn, for example :the radical of warter, then you could learn 江河湖海....

2. Strokes Order. If you are learning how to write the characters, the important thing is writing order. I met many foreigners who always forget how to write characters even they have learnt many times. The reason is the writing order is not correct, the order they write is as they like but not follow the right order, so it is difficult to remember even for Chineses.

3. Just reading. You could learn how to recognize the characters first, then one year or half year later learn how to write them.

4. Buying a good book. Generally speaking I will choose some good books for my students. Usually they will including how some characters come to today's shape. Because you could know why we write the characters like this but not like that. Most of the students will say "WOW ...interesing! " "Amazing!" then you could find some fun in that.

5. Confidence. Many of foreigners are afraid of learning characters, they always say "I don't want to learn drawing pics", however, we still have many good examples, they learn characters very well!!! You also can do it, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE! JUST DO IT! and you will enjoy it:) Good luck:)

Hi
As difficult as you learn Chinese, I was worried by studying English. But I believe there are some way to help you to learn Hanzi. First, you have to know XING, just like ‘how to spell a word’.Second, you must know Yi, just like’ what is the mean’. Third, you should know Yin, just like ‘ what is the pronunciation’. The most difficult thing is that so many Hanzi have difference means and pronunciations and you will notice that there is only one Xing. So when I was a boy, I had had to write down a word over hundred times. No other way . but aobut Yin and Yi, you should put it into a sentence, you will exactly understand them. One more thing, learn ‘word group’. For example, ‘道理’‘道德’‘道路’‘说道’‘门道’。You will be happy by ‘dao’ because many Chinese guys do not really understand this word.
I don’t know whether these can help you, I hope it will be,but you have to understand my English first.

if your aim is to recognize more than 1500 Chinese characters, my suggestion is that you should find a teacher to teach you. Or at least find a book about Chinese characters. Just like English's morphemes, different character parts stand for different meanings or pronounciations. if you know some, that will be really helpful. for example. the character 休 means " have a rest" the left part means "people" and the right part means " tree or wood" , so you can remember this character by thinking a person leans against a wood when he is having a rest.
Chinese characters are derived from pictures, some characters or some parts are just like the simpified structure of things. for example, 田 means field in chinese. it's just like the shape of Chinese corp field.
some Chinese characters part can also tell you how to pronounce it. for example, 丁,盯,钉,订,叮,町they are almost of the same pronounciation. here 丁is the part they are in common and this is the part that take charge of the pronouciation. and the left part usually take charge of the meaning, so 目means eye, 盯means staring. 钅means metal, so 钉means nail. 讠means writing, so 订means revising. 口means month, so 叮means talking or biting. 田means field, so 町 means a place.
When you learn that you'll find Chinese characters are really interesting, at least to me. at one thing i think is quite important when you try to remember Chinese charater is that you should imagine!

Hello Cherry, at first thanks for your answer to my question, appreciated that, my English is not good, but I will try as you suggested. And in answer to your question, have to say that you'd better learn step by step, if possible for you to have a Chinese teacher, just learn from him/her and practise yourself as you suggested to me, maybe as most the answers shown, I also would like to help on this, however to make sure you will get improved, I still suggest that you find a Chinese teacher who can teach you in the flesh. Hope this make a little sense, and would to help you in Chinese anytime!
