What does "for" mean at the head of a sentence?

I have for many times seen sentences which start with "For". For example, "For as long as people have vied for sporting glory, they have also sought shortcuts to the champion's rostrum." I think it is ok to cover the meaning without "For" at the head, but people must use it for a reason, so can you tell me why? THX..

'For' is a multi-purpose word with different definitions depending on the context. In the example you have chosen, it is a preposition which indicates a length of time. You have also used it in the phrase 'for example', where it is a preposition meaning a suitability for a purpose.

Essentially, there are two basic definitions of "for" that I can think of. One-the way "for" is used in your example-is a reference to something, whether it is time, a thing, or a person. Example: I got a pair of shoes for my friend. The other use of "for" would imply cause and effect between two things. Example: I went to the store, for I was out of milk. I hope this helps. :)
