Basic Japanese Characters (letters) and pronounciation...

What is the name of the Japanese characters?
Where Can I find a list of the most widely used characters or phrases with PHONETIC spelling. For example, the phrase:

君が要ること。。。
Kimi ga iru koto...
"I need you..."

I need something along those lines so I can begin to understand each character. (for example, in Mandarin characters, a way to write them in Roman characters is pinyin, what is the Japanese equivalent?)
