I can not fully understand with a sentence, i need your help

I was puzzled with a sentence when i read a passage called LES , would you like to give me a hand ^_^ . It is said a boy fall in love with a girl ,but the boy is so curious why the girl refused him when he asked her to allow him to walk her home, so one evening ,the boy dicide to follow her.However i can qiute see the meaning of "I carefully hide behind trees and bushes as i followes her down the trail beside the river", i can not fully make it clear,the "follow……down "is a phrase or follow here is matched with "the trail"?can you explain the construction and traslate the sentence into chinese for me :) i am very appreciate for your help^_^

"Follow down the path" simply means he walked along the path behind her and the trail lead to the river.
However gradual trails lead "down" to rivers and "up" away from rivers.
If they were already at the river and she walked away from the river, the sentence might read,
"he followed her up the trail...."

In a boat you can also say "I followed him "down" the river."

... down the trail beside the river: 沿着河边的痕迹。这里的down不是指位置上的高低,而是沿着、顺着的意思。
同样常用的词还有“up”。

yep,i'm agree with the upstairs.and maybe there is another meaning:down,表示顺着河流往下游走,up表示要前往上游。if i'm wrong,somebody could correct mistakes,please:) thanks.
