There are no better languages. There are just languages. The language can be totally different, or similar. Spanish and Portuguese are both latin languages. Someone said that Portuguese and Spanish are twin languages. Portuguese and Italian are sister languages and Portuguese, French are cousins languages, Portuguese and english are relatives. I am Brazilian and even without studying spanish I can read and I can communicate and they can understand me and I can understand them almost perfectly. There are great Spanish writers and great Portuguese writers. There are about 400 million people that speak Portuguese in Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Green, São Thomé e Principe and more.
In Spain four languages (Catalan, Bask, Galician) are spoken, not only Spanish.
So, each one with its peculiarities. These two languages are among the seven most spoken and studied in the world (Spanish in forth and portuguese in seventh - see http://www.krysstal.com/spoken.html). You can see a sample here in italki.
