How many hours, in total, does one need to learn a foreign language?

I have read somewhere that a Brazilian needs to study about 1.200 hours in order to speak and to understand English at an intermediate level.
Do you have any idea about the language you are learning, also considering your native language?

Depends of lots of things:
- Language the person wants to learn
- Language(s) the person already knows
- How well the person knows these languages
- Age of the person
- How much he works a day
- Motivation
- Health
- Memory, intellectual skills
- Whether these hours of study is studying lists of grammar or conjugation by heart (kind of pointless), or if these hours is serious practice

These are just a few I think =) I really don't think you can give an amount of hours. For one person, it could take 1000 hours, when for another person it could take 20000 hours.

I don't think there has to be a specific time for learning a language, everyone learns at his or her own pace

I don't think that it may be sized by hours !!
Do study in ur free time continously if it's posible then take a short break and so on..
Do enjoy learning by loving the material .
Earn any hour to study the maximum as u can.
As long as ur doing ur best u gonna develop ur level .
That's how to deal with any foreign language !

Hi another interesting question Joao! Sometimes people take a lifetime to really master a language. Slang changes. Funny how some people think Australians still say g'day mate! Unless you have an intended goal [a job, relocation to another city, a foreign girl/boy friend etc] most people will just learn a language in whatever free time they can spare it. Joining/ forming an English speakers' group that meet at a cafe each week in your area may be your answer.Just make sure that you have at least one native speaker in your group.
