What book and writer do you recommend in your native language? Why?

In Portuguese, because I am Brazilian, I would recommend two Brazilians books and writers. The first one is a classic, Dom Casmurro, a Machado de Assis's book. The second is Poesia Completa of the Brazilian Poet Mario Quintana.

I would recommned "The curious incident of the dog in the night time" (I know it is a long title) by Mark Haddon. The language is easy to understand but it still provides new expressions and vocabulary. Also, most of the sentences are simple sentences, so it's easy to understand the whole story. Finally, I recommend this book because it is quite funny and smart.

My native language is also Portuguese, I'm brazillian too :P But I seriously, -SERIOUSLY- recommend José Saramago - Ensaio Sobre a Cegueira, which by the way is the base of the movie "Blindness" recently launched to the movies. José Saramago is from Portugal and the book is written in portugal's portuguese. The book is awesome and Saramago is, at least for me, a genious.

I think Stephen King books are great for english learners. his books have lots of slang. furthermore often his books are also on CD as unabridged. that means the announcer reads the book from cover to cover. you can follow along. His books are also simple. and he likes to describe the situation to very detail.

Anything from Yeats or Keats...because Ireland has the best writers of English (and Irish, of course) in the world! :-)
