can i use the verb "estar" instead of "hay" in some conditions?

in sentence:
Cuántos lapices hay en la caja?
Cuántos lapices están en la caja? (makes sense? or?)
if i can't use "están" instead of "hay" can anyone also tell me why i can't use it please.

thanks

yes You can use that, ex: "hay lapices aqui?", cause It's the verb "haber", like "have"

Both of them are correct. However, '''Cuántos lápices hay en la caja?''' sounds better than the second one. hope it helps :)

You can use both sentence
Están come from the verb Estar "How many pencils are in the box?"
Hay come from the verb Haber "How many pencils has the box?"
