How did you learn Chinese? You weren't able even to walk but you would hear day after day your parents and people around you speaking Chinese. We learn basically, but not exclusively, by hearing. V.persie is right when he says, "reading can make you gain many words". We are "hearing" what other people say when we read what they write. But reading does not give you the opportunity of improving your pronunciation. Therefore, Oliver, hearing is the key. And add to your hearing a lot of reading as well.
