i should say, great minds do not always think alike. Different people can have various standards of beauty. Some put the beauty of heart of a girl in the most important positon, some just care about the appearence, and others may be particuliar about both the inner and outer part of a girl. Haha! You have all the answers here. Personally, I like phat but i love personality, meaning personality and attitude before appearance. Media? Yes! Friends point of view of your girl? Yes! Does it matter if her personality is way better? NO! The only problem is that fat girls don't get fairness in public.....they are easily judged without getting to know them. But then life is not fair to start....

I concur that it is mostly because of the ideals of a society. In the western culture the media networks are the ones who have the most influence and literaly dictate what is suppost to be desired.

On the other hand there are some archetypical signs to which the other sex is reacting. With men it is the hourglass scheme which is signalising fertility. And with women it is the upside down triangle form wich signals physical fitness and the ability to protect her children. They are as old as mankind.

And also I want to add that women always are ranting about how ignorant and superficial men are. Yet I made the experience that women themselfs can be quite superficial. Not all, but a good amount of them choose their partner for looks or status or wealth.

The problem is what society promotes: TV, magazines,etc all show skinny girls and when this 'perfect image' is over and over replayed you accept as a real idea. I am a fashion stylist and i made a point to my manager : why we do not make fat mannequins?!(just as an example) and she replyed 'because nobody does that and that's what we see on TV ' Nobody tries to make a change...I believe that if you have a nice personality you can win. -We- , human kind, we tend to care about what other say, even in your heart you like that person , but we wish society' s approval... I respect those man or women that date chubby people , because we are all the same. Before i married i have dated only good looking guys and they all made me hurt, until i met a chubby guy and he was the one for me ;) So believe in happy endings ;)

This is just my personal opinion on this--
Fat girls lack some key things when it comes to their character, things that are important to me. I don't think there is a woman out there that thinks, "I want to be fat". Right? So if we take that as a given, it should follow that most fat girls would want to lose weight. Why don't they? Its due to a lack of motivation and willpower. Any fat person, unless they have SEVERELY malfunctioning glands can lose the weight and transform their body. It doesn't take that much time or effort. So if they don't have the willpower or motivation to do something as simple as lose some weight, I doubt they are going to go far in life anyway. So, I dont want to be with them when it comes to relationships. Oh and to be clear, i'm talking about rather overweight girls...not the ones that are just "thick".
