The verb “robi” without the pronoun “się” is used in the 3rd person singular to describe the activity that someone does or makes, for example: “On robi zadanie domowe” - “He is doing (his) homework”, “Ona robi zakupy” - “She is doing the shopping”, “On robi herbatę” - “He is making (a cup of) tea”. However, the verb “robi się” is used with the reference to a state or conditions the same as English construction “it’s getting”, that’s why you can say for example: “Robi się późno/ciemno/zimno” - “It’s getting late/dark/cold”.
