"...can we expect sustained growth?" - I don't agree with this translation - "expect", as far as I now, is when you know there's a possibility of something happening. I think the Portuguese for "expect" would be more "esperar".

"Aspirar" has a physical meaning - to breath in air, but also another meaning - to wish something, to have a dream, to want something - "Aspiro ser médico" - "I want to be a doctor".

So, I would say "Can we wish for sustained growth?" - which is probably a rethorical question, since sustained growth is considered a positive thing, and it's obvious that everybody "aspira" positive things.

I agree with Martinho's answer, "aspire" is the best word to translate "aspirar", see http://www.thefreedictionary.com/aspire to see the "aspire" meaning in english.

And I suggest you to read my answer again. Your dictionary doesn't give all the possible meanings of "aspirar" in Portuguese. It doesn't say that "aspire" has the meaning of sucking air. I checked the Online Cambridge Dictionary also, and it gives the same definition:

So, according to those dictionaries, "aspire" would be only convinient in this context, but not in the context of the phrase "O menino aspirou poeira", which would be better translated for "The boy breathed in dust".

There's also "aspirate", that can have this first meaning of the verb in Portuguese.

So, if you aspire to be so precise, you shouldn't say that "aspire" is so perfect to translate "aspirar".

My first thought was "aspire." After reading martinho's answer and giving it a second thought. I have concluded that him and I are correct.

Meu achamento primeiro estava "aspire." Na maioria dos casos, a resposta mais simples é melhor. Então, si "aspirar" e "aspire" teriam os "latin root" mesmo, por que não usa? As signifícas, neste caso, eu acho, são iguais.
