1. It indicates relationship of turning point.
① It connects parallel adjectives or verbs, like the usage of 然而(rán’é,)、但是(dànshì) or却(què), two parts, meaning the contrary, the latter part is the amendment and addition to the first part.
②It connects two small sentences, indicating two relative or contrary things. 而can only be used as the head of the latter sentence.
③ The two parts before and after 而; one is affirmative and the other one is negative comparing the aspects of one thing.
2. It indicates complementary.
①It connects two parallel adjectives;
②It connects verb phrase or small sentences, and there is the relationship of continuing or progressing.
3. An adjective or a verb is used before 而，which refers to a way or state.
