Bruce
While I was checking one company named Hiking Group, one of my US friends told me "Hiking" means something else in English. He suggested the company get a new name, but he didn't tell me why. Is anybody know the reason?

By the way, he said it is about "name" confusion issue. But I am still confused about it.

Thanks for your answer, Cherry. The company does international business in various fields. I guess maybe the meaning"increasing a price" is what my friend talked about. We'll see.

This noun means the activity of going for long walks in the country for pleasure: go hiking.
It is the noun 'hike' (NOT hiking) that means 'a large or sudden increase in prices, costs, etc.': a hike in prices, a price hike.
If the company is using the noun 'hike' which also means ' a long walk in the country', so it has to change its name because it is confusing as your friend said.
However, there's no need to change it if it is using 'Hiking' which means 'the activity of going for long walks in the country for pleasure'.

Hello Bruce,

Hiking could mean:

- walking a long way usually for pleasure or exercise especially in the country.
- increasing a price. , a rise in prices ,wages.

So I am not sure what the activity of the company might be.
It could be for excursions ,tours and travel or a company dealing in finance or the like.
You have to mention more of the context !

Hi Bruce, your friend may have been thinking of the slang term for 'hike'
' take a hike' is slang meaning to leave because one's presence is unwanted. Often used in the imperative.
