Il-Kantilena is the oldest poem found which is written in medieval Maltese. It clearly shows that around 600 years ago the Maltese language was closer to Arabic. Below is a link of the poem:

According to Professor Zammit it is highly probable that Maltese was more similar to Arabic in the 15th century because foreign travellers wrote that the people of Malta spoke 'a form of Arabic'. Zammit gives some grammatical explanations why Maltese was pronounced in this way.
What makes Dr Martin Zammit (and others) think that Maltese was spoken as it is spoken in this video? How could they make this decision?
