When to pronounce つ and when not to.

I'm fairly new at learning Japanese and sometimes I come across some words that require pronouncing つ and other leaving the つ silent. For example, in this case (ずつと) you wouldn't pronounce the つ but in this case (かつ) you would prounounce the つ. I'm wondering why sometimes it is like that and when to know when to prounounce the character and when to not. Thanks! :)

I'm not Japanese but for what I learn I think I can tell you. :)

つ is the kana pronounced as "tsu".

But there is also a smaller one called "sokuon" っ which is used to double a consonant sound. Example, もっと ( motto ) 、ずーっと ( zutto ) or まった ( matta )

They look alike but are differents ! Pay attention to their size !

( Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I'm a beginner myself and my english is not perfect so I can't explain really good but I think I'm right )

I think I didn't understand your question for my English. I'm Japanese and we pronounce つ of ずつ, it's needed to pronounce. If I understood wrong, could you explain more about your question?
