I think your best option at intermediate level might be "young adult" novels. These are books aimed at teenagers and people in their twenties, but are enjoyed by people of any age. A lot of books that are adapted into movies fall into this category, so you might try looking for books that were adapted into films you enjoy. You can find a lot of "young adult" reading lists online for recommendations.
