Although it was only a translation, I think my favorite book is Don Quixote.

It's very hard to say, and the books that gave me the most intense excitement at the time are not necessarily the ones I would think are best now.

However, some that just drew me in and forced me to read to the end, felt as if they were talking to me, and that I thought were wonderful at the time I read them are:

The Time Machine, by H. G. Wells--it's not really all that great but I was exactly ready for it at the time I read it;

The Lord of the Rings (trilogy) by J. R. R. Tolkien;

Studs Lonigan (trilogy) by James T. Farrell;

Several of Elizabeth George's mystery novels.

It's always hard for me to answer this question, I can't even choose for one name. But I would like to recommend "Forbidden" by Tabitha Suzuma, it's the saddest story I've ever read. I felt completely shocked after finishing it and couldn't get it out of my mind for a week.
