learn about Azerbaijanis` tragedy- Hojali

<em>THE HOJALI TRAGEDY</em>

Hojali is situated in Garabag. It borders on Hankandy, Askaran and Agdam. It is a mountainous region. Hojali is an old cultural centre of Garabag. The historical temples date back to the 13th century.
Prevent Azerbaijan from completely independence M.Gorbachov used Armenians very actively. When Azerbaijan declared its independence it didn`t have strong army, the army wasn`t  secured with arms. The army was consist of self-defence battalions, they had chosen defence  tactics. They couldn`t resist against Russian and Armenian armed force.
Under existing conditions Armenian invaders were widened attack to the villages that Azerbaijanis lived in Upland Karabakh, with the help Russians. In January 1992 they  occupied Karkijahan, in February Malibeyli, Gushchular villages, surrounded Hojali and Shusha. New created military units carried on a struggle with operation “Dashalti” to break out of encirclement Shusha but the operation failed.
In unequal fight enemy`s military units occupied village Garadagli, executed about 150 diffenders and village inhabitants, threw dead bodies into the silo trench. February 25, in the evening at 9 o`clock Armenian armed forces, the 366th mechanized rifle regiment and hired assassins belonged to Russia attacked Hojali. After training for artilleria enemy armoured tanks and military installations brought into the town. the helpless people of Hojali fought against the Armenian soldiers about eight hours. It was procreated one of the greatest tragedies of 20th century- Hojali.
Having 150 diffenders Hojali stayed face to face with enemy. Enemy punched the fist blow to the airport. Alif Hajiyev was the commandant of Hojali then, he fought against the enemy bravely. The same time under the leadership of him was 22  group of people. They could repulse enemy`s attacks three times. But understanding the hopeless situation commander decided to explode the airport not to give enemy a chance to grasp it and only then he ordered his people to leave the city. He lost many of his friends and relatives in that battle. . Alif Hajiyev lost his life heroically in the following fights.
All the inhabitants had to leave the city that night. But not everybody could leave the city safe and sound; some were killed by Armenians, some were taken hostages and some were lost in the mountains, only very few of them could escape.
Armenians didn`t feel sorry for old people, women, even babies. A lot of people were burned in their houses locking the doors. One of the eye-witnesses says, he still feels of human`s flesh in this terrible night that have been burned alive.
During Hojali tragedy our people`s hero Chingiz Mustafayev showed unprecedented feat to uncover Armenian fascists` these bloody crimes. After his death Chingiz Mustafayev was honoured with the name of Azerbaijan National Hero. He was correspondent of Azerbaijan television. Chingiz Mustafayev was one of the people going to the accident place. He said that they went to tragedy area accompanied by 2 military helicopters on February 28. He has taken photos of some children whose ears were cut. Armenians have taken out dead bodies` brain, pulled out their toenails.
Some foreign journalists have gone to Hojali and seen all Armenian`s barbarism with their own eyes. One of them- French journalist said that he had seen wars, heard about German fascists`s crimes. But Armenians left them behind killing 5-6 years children, peaceful inhabitants.
The genocide in one of the most ancient settlements of Hojali during the first stage of the conflict in Nagorny Karabakh, which started between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 1988, is one of the most terrible, tragic and unprecedented events in human history. The tragedy of Hojali stands in the same level as the most terrible and cruel tragedies carried out in Xatin, Hiroshima.
Hojali had a population of  7 thousand before the tragedy in 1992. This was also a home to refugees who were forced during that period from Armenia and IDPs from neighboring Hankendi, as well as to Meskheti Turks, who were forced from Fergana in 1989.
On 26 February night of 1992 the Armenians deployed their forces in Hankendi and with the help of the 366th shooting military regiment of former USSR attacked defenseless and helpless Xojali.
It started with Armenian forces surrounding the town from the four directions and opening heavy and ceaseless fire from artillery and salvo launchers. Within a short time, the city was enveloped in flames of fire. The defending army and local population had to leave town. Hojali was occupied by the Armenian invaders by 5 AM.
Within one night the town was razed to the ground.
The population left town to escape in the mountains and forests. Armenian armed forced were firing peace civilians from all sides and jeered at them cruelly. Many young girls were taken hostages that cold snowy night. Many of those who tried escaping from Armenian forces in the forests and mountains, froze to death. As a result of Armenian invasion, 613 residents of Hojali were killed, 478 heavily injured. 1275 peace civilians, including elderly persons, children and women, were taken hostages and suffered heavy insults and offences from the Armenians. The fate of 150 of these persons is still remaining unknown. That was a true genocide. Out of 613 civilians killed in Hojali, 106 were women, 63 children and 70 elderly persons.
During the Hojali tragedy, 8 entire families were annihilated, 24 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one of the parents.
56 persons were killed with special cruelty. They were burnt to death, had their heads cut off, face skin taken off, eyes pricked out. Armenians also did violence to pregnant women and profaned the dead bodies.
The nation and the state of Azerbaijan do not forget the Hojali tragedy.
Heydar Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, issued a special decree regarding the Hojali genocide on March 1st 1994. According to an appropriate decree of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the 26th day of February was declared as the national mourning day in memory of the Hojali genocide. The corresponding notifications were sent to all international organizations.
On February 26th 1997, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan issued a decree on the announcement of a minute of silence in memory of the Hojali genocide victims. The President of Azerbaijan makes a speech addressed to the nation of Azerbaijan in connection with the Hojali genocide on February 26th every year.
