Russian alphabet

Let's learn Russian alphabet.


1) letters а, б, в, г, д, e


"а" is [a] in a word "America"

"б" is [b] in a word "boy"


Try to read a word: баба

Answer: [baba] the underlined letter is the stressed syllable.


"в" - [v]  ex., vale

"г" - [g]   ex., go

"д" - [d]   ex., do (without aspiration, there is not aspiration in Russian)

"e" - [ye]   ex., like "ye" in "yes"


try reading the following:















2) letters ё, ж, з, и, й, к


ё [yo] like "yo" in New York

ж [zh] there is no such a word in English, in French the similar sound is rendered by "j" in a word "je" (I)


Try reading: ёж

The answer is [yozh]


з - [z] as in zone

и - [i] as in bill

к - [k] as in kill


Try reading: Ик, ёжик.

Answers: [ik], [yozhik]

Try reading the words, translate, learn by heart:

еда, визг, гад, ёжик, беда, ваза, езда.

3) letters л, м, н, о, п, р


л - [l] in lie


Try reading: лёд, клик, вилка

Answers: [lyod], [klik], [vilka]


м - [m] in me


Try reading: мама, мёд, зима

Answers: [mama], [myod], [zima]


н - [n] in no

о - [o] in doll


Try reading: нос, небо, лом, мина, бомба

Answers: [nos], [nyebo], [lom], [bomba]


п - [p] in pen

р - [r] in Rome


Try reading: поле, Рим, ром, пар, репа

Answers: [polye], [rim], [rom], [par], [ryepa]



4) Letters с, т, у, ф, х

с - [s] in snow

Try reading: село, сода, сор

Answers: [syelo], [soda], [sor]

т - [t] in try

Try reading: тир, тина, нoтка

Answers: [tir], [tina], [notka]

у - [u] in book, ф - [f] in fine

Try reading: фунт, рука, фен

Answers: [funt], [ruka], [fyen]

х - [h] in how

Try reading: пух, дух, холст

Answers: [puh], [duh], [holst]

5) letters ц, ч, ш, щ


ц - sounds like "t" and "s" pronounced together [ts]

ч - [ch] as in choose

ш - [sh] as in shall

щ - no similar sound, sounds like [t] and [sh] pronounced together [tsh]

Try reading this: чаша, чай, шов, шрам, щи, цена

Answers: [chasha], [chai], [shov], [shram], [tshi], [tsyena]

6) letters ъ, ы, ь, э, ю, я 


ъ - hard sign

ы - no similar sound, [yi]

ь - soft sign (makes a preceding consonant sounf soft)

э - [e] like e in bed

ю -[yu] "y" in New York, and "oo" in book

я  - [ya]


Try reading: яма, юла, эльф, мы, Обь, объезд

Answers: [yama], [yula], [eljf], [myi], [obj], [ob'ezd]


NB: In the word "объезд" the hard sign is used to make the B sound hard, as vowel "e" [ye] always makes the preceding consonant soft. As well as the vowel "и"
