Any and Some
help: what's the difference of anybody, somebody, someone and anyone? same to anything, something and what abt any thing, some thing..? there some difference between any thing and anything (and the others cases)?
As native speakers we sometimes don't realize the complexity of certain words. While trying to come up with a suscinct answer, I found myself looking these words up on Merriam-Webster's http://www.learnersdictionary.com/ Their definitions and usage guides are better than anything I could come up with.
In regards to "some thing", "any thing", etc. I cannot see any use for them other than being emphatic and such uses would be stylistically risky. However, since "body" can also mean "corpse," "any body" and "some body" make sense as "any corpse" and "some corpse." That's a little bit morbid though.
well think about it this way
"i don't want to be just Anybody. i want to be somebody"
you could link the two words to status; somebody - a person of importance, well-known
Anybody - a person in the crowd,
the Queen is somebody whereas too her I, myself would be just anybody.
the same goes for some/anyone.
as for 'Anything' that is used as a negative type of "filler" i'll call it
so for example "i did not say anything to her" whereas 'something' suggests theres an unidentifyed object " i think something just fell from the sky"
Both refer to objects/things.
just think that 'any' is negative and 'some' is positive.
finally if you were to write any thing or some thing, it wouldn't make sense unless the item you were refering to is known as a 'thing'. eg, any nail/ any day/ any man
'some body' written in this way can become a sort of compliment.
"that is some body you've got there" again 'some' is a positive pronoun.
hope i helped in some way.
