Sollniss,

Bacially, we write こと in hiragana after verb.

料理(りょうり)をすることが好(す)きです。

フランスに行ったことがあります。

 

Except that, we normaly write in kanji.

事の重大(じゅうだい)さに気付(きづ)く。 "I now realized how serious it was".

 

But it's not like you must follow the rule. We tend to use hiragana or kanji when we want to use. We don't care about so much "when to use which", but see the whole sentenses and think about the balance. We don't like too many kanji or too many hiragana. So if you write:

料理をする事が好きです。

That's fine. Nobody cares, actually :)

I really appreciate the article, but the fact that it's written in Japanese frustrated me because I am focused on learning to speak Japanese, not read and write it. It made it extremely difficult for me to use the article...
