Easter Sunday

This Sunday, April 20th, is when the US will be observing Easter. Every year, my family continues the tradition of coloring Easter eggs like so many other American families do. Now that my sister and I are much older though, we, of course, do not partake in the traditional Easter Egg Hunt ourselves, but now hide eggs for my niece to find instead. Along with actual eggs that are painted, we also hide plastic Easter eggs that you can buy at any Walmart or department store. We place money inside these plastic eggs for her, typically ten dollar or twenty dollar bills. I guess my niece is spoiled in that sense because some American kids only get an Easter basket with candy. I love my niece though, and I enjoy giving her cash on holidays so she can then take it and create warm memories with her friends, either by spending it at the movies with them, going to the mall to rollerblade, or whatever. I think it is important for children to have a social life and to be able to the movies or wherever with friends, and also for them to create childhood memories that they will cherish the rest of their lives.

When my sister and I were children and when my grandmother on my father's side was still alive, my grandmother used to decorate her entire house for Easter. I remember she would have these decorative Easter eggs that were the size of grapefruits out on her shelves. The insides of these eggs were hollowed out and a hole was made into the side of each egg. Inside, an Easter scene was portrayed, typically a rabbit with some Easter grass, an Easter chick with some flowers, etc. Until recently, I have not been able to find where to purchase them at but just last weekend, I stumbled upon some for sale at Atkins Fruit Bowl in Amherst, Massachusetts. They aren't quite as big but I think I may actually buy a few of them just for the nostalgic value and to remember my grandmother by. Anyhow, along her shelves and in heer windowsills, she also had plush Easter bunnies, easter eggs wrapped in shiny foil wrap, and wicker easter baskets, and stuffed animal chicks. She truly went all out during Easter, like she did for every other holiday.

It doesn't seem like a lot of the younger crowd gets into Easter that much anymore. A lot of them even use the excuse that it is too commercialized like Christmas is too. I hate that mentality though. If you don't want to spend money, then you can always create something by hand to brighten someone's day in my opinion. Another excuse that I hear from these people is that you shouldn't be nice to someone on just one day of the year but that you should instead be nice to people every day. Although, I agree that people should be nice to one another throughout the year, I still think that is a pretty weak reason to not do something for someone else on a holiday. Plus, I also do not see these people who are preaching this being proactive on that front by visiting a relative in a seniors home, doing volunteer work at a food shelter, etc. Let's just call it what it is. You are just being lazy and apathetic, and along the way, we're losing our culture.

Does anyone else out there celebrate Easter too? And what childhood memories do you have related to the holiday?

My English teacher just told me some knowledge about Easter Sunday in the last lesson. Rebirth of christ easter. Go outside to park, take boiled eggs for children. A great day and I like to have such a experience if possible.

Exactly, Sonia. I really do believe that traditions are important, so I don't buy into the whole "commercialism" argument. Ugh. Hehehe. Anyhow, you are welcome. :)

the Easter day is coming, i agree with your opinion. especial that 'you shouldn't be nice to someone on just one day of the year but that you should instead be nice to people every day'.

if everyday is same, then there is no special day, there is no holiday, we should have some special day for some valuable thing, some memorial thing.
