Nowadays, it has become un jeu d’enfant to learn a foreign language. But, how can you avoid getting lost in the sea of information and use the internet wisely? I’ll give you a clue.
I would like to add something to the smartphone section: the app Duolingo has taught me a lot! It's a fun app, it motivates you to practice every day and it is free. They also have a website with slightly more functions.

There are very many useful resources in the Internet and sharing them here is a great way to help others learn French.
Nice article. I found this blog that has conversations in normal paced french (they don't speak slowly) and they transcribe the conversations and explain the meanings of the expressions they use. http://francebienvenue1.wordpress.com/

On the internet you can also view many french native videos on YouTube. Great for learning to listen to natives speaking at rates that vary between normal speed and extrodinarily fast. I often find that by practicing with this very fast audio, when switching back to other material I can much more easily pick out words and phrases.
Coursera.org has several offerings in French. I have taken some and found that, because of the narrow focus of the class, it's very easy to follow the audio/subtitles. When searching for meaning in words I have never seen before it's so much easier when I know they are linked to a specific topic.
