One of the first things besides produced media, would probably be hot springs and bath houses.

They seem much more common in Japan, than America. I wish there was one close enough to me. Me and my wife went to one with my parents when we visited them in New Mexico (it's a state). It was really relaxing.

Japan's vending machines seems like a subtlety. Because, vending machines are common, but Japan's are very different and in very different places. In America, you really only find vending machines inside buildings. Something like in a hotel lobby, or inside an office building's cafeteria. If you think about it, they're a characteristic, but it's easy to overlook it, I think.
