What are the most prevelant languages spoken in Slovakia and Hungary in your opinion?

In Slovakia: Slovak, followed by Czech, German, English, ...
In Hungary: Hungarian, followed by English, German, ...
Hopefully this is not only a hearsay?

So knowing English and German might just get by during a short stay for months, I guess?

Is Russian that "useless" in these both countries?

Have you come up with Croatian language when you read my questions, by the way?

As a person living in Slovakia, I can say that most people under 30 don´t know Russian. The reason is easy. Everyone had to learn Russian language due to communism and socialism, but since the last 20years, most of young people prefer english and german language, because it has a better use. So if you would come to a shop, most probably the personal, 30+, wouldn´t be able to answer you on your question if you wouldn´t speak Russian, Czech or Slovak. Hope I helped you at least a bit :)

Meem, I've lived in Slovakia for three years and I can tell you that English isn't as useful or commonly-used as you think.  Many times there wasn't an "English" option, and I found it constantly amusing to see multilingual signs that didn't include English.

English will help you a lot anyplace.
