How to interpret "otherwise" here

Original from theconversation.com:

This suggests social media might encourage users to seek support in situations where they would not have otherwise done so

can you rephrase it in place of "otherwise"?

can I rephase it as:

This suggests social media might encourage users to seek support in situations where they would impossibly have done so

or

This suggests social media might encourage users to seek support in situations where they would not have done anything else.

Darn it.  Somehow I typed my last example incorrectly.  It should be:

"I use social media for support, otherwise I would have no support."

Your first sentence is not correct.  (I say that not to be rude, but to be sure you don't equate 'otherwise' with 'impossible'.)

Your second sentence is much closer to the meaning.

The word 'otherwise' is used to emphasize a different possible situation.  Consider the following separate sentences.

"I steal food.  If I did not steal food, I would starve."

We can use the word 'otherwise' to emphasize the different situation which would occur without theft.

"I steal food, otherwise I would starve."

Now consider these two sentences.

"Social media is free and anonymous.  Without social media, I would have no support."

We can use the word 'otherwise' to emphasize the different situation which would occur without social media.

"I use social media support, otherwise I would no have no support."

The text you provided is a variation of my last example above.
