Frank
'if' question in Eric Clapton's song

If I can change the world
I would be the sunlight in your universe
You would think my love was really something good
Baby if I could change the world

<Change the world>

The first 'if', I think it should be 'If I could change the world'.

Why it actually is 'can'? Is there any reason?

"Change The World"

If I could reach the stars
Pull one down for you,
Shine it on my heart
So you could see the truth:

That this love inside
Is everything it seems.
But for now I find
It's only in my dreams.

And I can change the world,
I will be the sunlight in your universe.
You would think my love was really something good,
Baby if I could change the world.

If I could be king,
Even for a day,
I'd take you as my queen;
I'd have it no other way.

And our love would rule
This kingdom we had made.
'til then I'd be a fool,
Wishing for the day...

That I can change the world,
I would be the sunlight in your universe.
You would think my love was really something good,
Baby if I could change the world.
Baby if I could change the world.

I could change the world,
I would be the sunlight in your universe.
You would think my love was really something good,
Baby if I could change the world.
Baby if I could change the world.
Baby if I could change the world.

I think the first 'if'-clause should be 'If I could change the world'.

Why is it actually 'can'? Is there any reason?

The obvious answer is that it's a mixed conditional. We're not limited to the simple conditional patterns, expecially if they don't fit the context.

The less-obvious answer is that you have the wrong lyrics. These lyrics match the song (yes, I checked): http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ericclapton/changetheworld.html

Chorus 1:

And I can change the world,
I will be the sunlight in your universe. (No problem here - it's not a conditional)

Chorus 2:

(Wishing for the day...)

That I can change the world,
I would be the sunlight in your universe. (again, not a conditional)

Chorus 3:

I could change the world,
I would be the sunlight in your universe. (and once more... not a conditional)

No rules broken here, says Mr Clapton. ;)

The last one is 'That'. But to be honest, I cannot hear the differece. Its really hard to hear for non-English speaker...

Thank you to reply Aegis
