There are many English dialects. Sometimes speakers of different dialectunderstand each other wrong. Pronunciation of a person from one English language country may be unusual for a person from another English language country. Are films and broadcasts translated from one dialect to another?
No. The dialects are understandable by speakers of other dialects. Even ones as different as Australian English and American English. Sometimes a British film or television program will be remade completely with American actors (The Office is an example), but not because American's can't understand the British dialect.
English doesn't vary as much as you think. It's impossible to translate from one 'dialect' to another because there's nothing to translate - the only difference is the accent, and sometimes some vocabulary as well. An extemely strong southern US or Scottish accents might cause listeners to have to listen really hard if they're not used to those accents, but that's rarely a problem. People from different countries and states don't switch to 'standard English' to talk: they just speak in their normal accent and speak more slowly if there are any problems. I actually think most native speakers from all English speaking countries would be insulted if someone implied that their accent was non-standard and that they should 'switch' to a standard English.
Movies and TV shows use a large variety of accents anyway, which native speakers are constantly exposed to. Finding a movie all in one accent is actually very rare.
People from one English speaking area can generally understand those from other areas. Occasionally the speech may need to be slowed down a bit because of accents. Also there may be problems with individual words that may be assigned slightly different meanings depending upon the location.
This is not true at all, Katerina. There are variations in pronunciation between one English-speaking region and another, and some differences in vocabulary, but very few instances of what language experts would call 'dialect'. Even when some expressions are unfamiliar, or the accent is not what we are used to hearing, English-speakers can still understand each other. There is never any need to translate.
Thank you all. There is a standart Russian Dialect. The development of television and mass migration in the 20th century contributed to a sharp decline in traditional dialects. Now I understand the situation with the English language.
