For Ellen (who asked the question) or for anybody :) How to add Russian in Windows XP

Hi, Ellen. I'm learning Russian, too. If you have Windows XP, you can type Russian by doing the following: Go to your Start menu. Go to Control Panel. Click on "Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options." Click on "Add other languages." Select the "Languages" tab, and then click on "Details." Change the Input Language from English to Russian, and click on "Apply" on each window on which it appears. You will now have a language bar on your desktop screen. Click on the bar to open it, and select Russian. Now you will be able to use your keyboard to type in Russian. When you want to type in English again, just select English on the bar. There are also Quick Keys you can set up to change easily from one language to another. I've forgotten at the moment what commands to use to bring up a Russian virtual keyboard on your screen so that you can see which keys on the keyboard correspond to which Russian letters (until eventually your fingers have learned them so well that you no longer have to refer to this helpful layout. Will write another note here when I find out. :)

I discovered that the Russian keyboard that Windows XP uses has a standard Russian typewriter layout, which is very difficult for those of us who are used to the standard QWERTY layout. Therefore, I did some more Internet searching and discovered a way to download a PHONETIC Russian layout, which matches the QWERTY pretty closely, that is, b produces б and r produces р and s produces с, etc. The site offers three easy phonetic keyboard options (I chose #2, the first alternate, which assigns Russian В to English V). The URL is http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/paulgor/kbd_e.htm . Paul gives extremely clear instructions about how to download and install the files. Всё хорошово!

Oops! хорошего. :)

Hi

You have some links above to my site at ourworld.compuserve.com ... but is no more :( - Compuserve closed all sites of all its subcribers...

My site moved to http://WinRus.com and thus the new address for the links in the above messages are:

- How to setup Russian typing under non-Russian MS Windows (Standard or Phonetic layout): http://WinRus.com/kbd_e.htm

- If you are out of your computer, say in a hotel in Spain: how to type with the same layout you use at home (with the keyboard, not mouse):
