A friend of mine wants me to tutor him in Spanish as he is struggling in Spanish class. How can I help him do better on tests and quizzes? Is there any secret formula? How should I prepare for our meetings? Keep in mind that this is for getting a higher grade in the class. Do any experienced tutors and teachers have any advice? Thanks for your time!

Depends on what he/she wanted to improve. For example, I've noticed that subjunctive it's quite difficult to learn for. As native speaker we know how to use and construct it, however the key is mainly how do you think and express the idea.
For instance:
when someone knock the door... in spanish says: "voy" where english says "I'm coming"
I automatically respond "I'm coming" because I was instructed to do it year by year, and I still don't know why "to come" instead of "go" or something more accurate.
