Can anyone offer a comparison between Skype and WeChat?

   I am wondering if I should open a WeChat account.

Should I insist that a prospective student use Skype?

I've never used Wechat, but I found this comparison of their features: http://versus.com/en/skype-vs-wechat

I've never used WeChat, but I've read about it. "WeChat is a mobile text and voice messaging communication service developed by Tencent in China." As of August 2014, WeChat has 368 million active users in China and 70 million users outside of China.

In June 2014, WeChat closed 20 million user accounts. "Chinese internet giant Tencent has closed 20 million accounts on its messaging app WeChat, 5% of the total, because they offered prostitution services, according to Chinese state media,..."

"Starting January 9, 2013 reports arose that Chinese language searches outside China were being keyword filtered and then blocked. This occurred both to China from foreign countries and from foreign countries to other foreign countries. WeChat already censors its communications within China. In this new international example of blocking, a message was displayed on users' screens reading “The message “南方周末” you sent contains restricted words. Please check it again." ... WeChat's servers are currently all located in China and thus subject to its censorship rules." Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WeChat;

Get Sandboxie and install that first. Then install WeChat under Sandboxie and you can try the software without any risk that it will do anything to your computer. Sandboxie is an awesome tool for trying out software & removing the risk of viruses. I run my web browser under Sandboxie & there is no fear. The idea is that anything that is changed while under Sandboxie is changed in a separate "sandbox" and those changes will only exist while the Sandboxie session is active. Once you exit Sandboxie, all of the changes are gone. For instance, if you run Internet Explorer under Sandboxie & you download a program & install it and then exit IE, the program will no longer exist, the downloaded file will no longer exist, and any changes made by that program will be gone. So clearly you wouldn't run Outlook or Excel under Sandboxie because any email that you received or spreadsheets that you create/modify will be untouched. But for testing new things or avoiding viruses, it's pretty damn good.

I think Skype might be better than We chat because Wechat is blocked in some countries and some have to pay for that. I always had such a problem with wechat but Skype is the best, at leats for me.

  I started to download WeChat, but the user agreement requires that I agree to allow WeChat to "scan" my computer to "make it run faster". I take exception to that sort of agreement.
