Is it possible to talk without knowing Japanese writing?

Is it possible to talk without knowing Japanese writing ?
I mean using the latin alphabet.
Example: 本当に = hontouni = seriously.

The japonese syllabary is so difficult. :(

Many long term expats only learn to speak Japanese but they have the benefit of being immersed in a Japanese-speaking environment on a daily basis. If you are studying on your own, you will be able to find many beginner level materials with romaji and English explanations but will quickly find your options for study materials very limited if you don't at least learn hiragana and katakana.

I guess it is possible. After all illterate people speak their language without knowing how to read or write. And many of them are very eloquent. But then again these are native speakers and are not learning the language.
