I'm not sure about English-speaking world, but in Russia I heard about it only in the context of: 1) specifically Japanese concept (dakimakura) 2) east asian / south-east asian 'bamboo wives' .

'hug pillow' is basicaly a functional description.

Googling 'body pillow' brings mostly results from online bedding shops, and mostly without toy-like appearance, pornograpic imagery, or sophisticated shape to fit human anatomy, all of which are present for 抱枕啊. So i don't like it.

I have read about Indonesians using something called a "hugging pillow", or bantal guling. I think the closest English word is actually "bolster".
