The third tone in Chinese is a tough one to grasp. Foreigners are taught to "visualise going down and then up", but there's a better way...

Third tone is the lowest pitch. By lowest, you have to put it with other tones to feel it. You can't tell is it the lowest by itself, it's like you can't clap with one hand.

Third tone is usually half pronounced. If you fully pronounce the third tone, you are either emphasising on something or you are making a joke of yourself.

For communicating purpose, either right tones OR correct sentence orders is necessary. You don't need both of them unless for tests.

I personally find certain combinations of tones extremely difficult. For example, 4th and then the 3rd or the 2nd and then the 1st. When you have to change the level quickly, especially from the lowest point to a higher one. Pronouncing tones separately isn't that difficult and is certainly possible to master after some practice.

听不懂 (ting1 bu4 dong3 or if you're in Beijing ting1 bu4 dong’r3)

北京虽然儿化音比较比,但“不懂”不会有儿化音。你确定听到的是土生土长的北京人说的吗?

我喜欢吃水果。(wo3 xi3 huan chi1 shui3 guo)
