We are twelve billion light years from the edge of the universe

The universe is estimated to be roughly 12-14 billion years old. A light year is the distance travelled by light in a year. The fastest anything can travel is at the speed of light (if it has no mass). If the universe started expanding from a single point 12 billion years ago, then the furthest away anything can be from that point is 12 billion light year; and no point within the universe can be more than 12 billion light years away from one "edge" of the universe (although it may be further away from another edge).
