I started listening to Russian music about a year ago and I must say that I am amazed by what I found, and keep finding every week. There is soooo much! I am definitely in to Russian indiepop from late 90's - mid 00's. Russian indie/britpop/rock has a lot in common with Swedish bands in the same genre, but they always have some twist that we lack in the "west". For the present I think great things are happening in electronica. For a beginner I think one should start with the black album of the group KINO, which is a Russian essential. You can find it in Spotify. And anything you won't find in Spotify you will surely find in VK. Good luck!
