So... i'm having a really hard time with kanji. Should I learn the translation first? or the reading?

It really depends on your preference either way is fine. Most Kanji (if not all) have multiple meanings (translations) also some kanji also have two readings as well on'yomi and kun'yomi. Most singular kanji use the on'yomi reading but there are some that use the kun'yomi reading. I suggest learning the radicals first then move up to learning the kanji because most radicals appear in one or more different Kanji and vocabulary as well.
I personally start off with the reading. It makes it much easier for me to associate the reading with the kanji, and after that associate the kanji with both the reading and the meaning. As you learn more kanji, you'll notice some components are similar between some kanji. These components (radicals) make it a lot easier to memorize the kanji, and in some cases help you guess at the meaning. My recommendation would be to learn some basic kanji, the ones that are most commonly used as radicals, and then move on to more complicated characters.
For me it's the oppposite. I'd learn the translation first so when you read it on paper you can get the general meaning. Then work on the reading. That's just my opinion. Either way, definately learn the radicals like Gary said. It will definately make learning Kanji a whole lot easier.
