Maybe it is important to recognize idioms when you are chatting to Native Speakers,but I personally don't expect students to use idioms in their speech,especially when they are so hard to use.IF you are a learner and you use idioms incorrectly it doesn't sound good.It is better to concentrate on using correct grammar and vocabulary,and to know the tenses and their uses.I don't think you need to worry about using idioms yourself.
