To ‘break something off’ can mean to end it.
‘He broke off the relationship after he found out she was going abroad to study.’
To ‘break off’ can also mean to separate something from the main part.
‘I love toffee, can you break off a piece for me?’

I think you understand it very well. The second sentence is more natural if you say "I love toffee, could you break a piece off for me please?"
