/ Overview /

- HSK was reviewed in 2010 (then revised again in 2012) from a 4 exam structure with 11 possible attainment levels (Old HSK) to the simpler 6 level structure (new HSK) we know today (this remains a source of confusion between and within some sources)

- European consensus is that New HSK6 is easier than the top level of the Old HSK system (and equates to approx B2 - C1 of the CEFR framework)

- A quantitative demonstration is the c. 5000 words required to pass the New HSK6 vs. the c. 8900 words required to reach the top level of Old HSK

- The New HSK levels (1 - 6) do not contain an oral component. These have instead been replaced by three standalone oral exams (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) the last level of which equates to roughly HSK5

/ Word tables /

HSK      Total      CEFR
Level     Words    Equiv.*
I           150        A1-
II          300        A1.1
III         600        A1
IV         1200       A2
V          2500       B1
VI**     5,000+    B2

* Hanban claims the levels are 1:1 with CEFR (i.e., HSK 6 = CEFR C2) but I've used the more conservative German and French Chinese institute estimates here. That said, I'm about HSKIV in vocab terms right now and I'm getting around China day-to-day pretty fine so these may be a bit harsh - any veteran oppinions?

** Total pre 2010 HSK vocab list is c. 8,800 words long (http://www.chinaeducenter.com/cecdl/HSK_Vocabulary_List.pdf)
