I have this goal of working in international development in Lusophone countries. Of course, I have to learn Portuguese. Ive been learning <em>Brazilian</em> Portuguese off and on for about a year. I would say that Im maybe at an <em>upper beginner/lower intermediate</em> level in <em>Brazilian</em> Portuguese at this point. My question is, should I be learning <em>European</em> Portuguese instead of Brazilian Portuguese in order to be understood in Lusophone countries other than Brazil? I'm getting conflicting answers depending on where I go online. Thanks.
All countries natives in Portuguese except the Brazil learn the European Portuguese, ofc some countries have the creoule and do mix, different expressions and words but they learn the European Portuguese for the simple fact in PALOPS (Lusophone Africa) they just got the independence in 1975 so the presence of Portuguese it's felt at today where exist a lot of Portugueses living in Afrika.
For example in Timor-Leste portugueses do peace missions and help in construction of schools. Macao just back to China in 1999 after almost of 500 years of portuguese domain.
Also who learn Pt-Br have more troubles in understand the European variant, including many Brazilians do not understand Portuguese, or even brazilians from other zones, but the same didn't happen because in Portugal people are accustom to the Brazil variant because of soap opera.
If you choose 10 afrikan persons in Portugal and 10 brazilian persons in Portugal, I almost put my hands in the fire (it's a expression) how the afrikans will understand the portugueses without any problem, but probably just 4/5 brazilians will understand a portuguese and will say we speak fast for we repeat all.
So I guess will be a little in shocking because you aren't accustom with that variation of the language and maybe you will have problems in understand them in first times.

It does not matter, both portuguese variants are understood in the lusophone world.
Brazilian portuguese is known in all countries that speak Portuguese because Brazil produces media that they constantly use, such as " documentaries, music, soap operas ", so they are used to it.

Edna A. We say Café and Bica, they are different kinds of coffee. For be honest a Bica in north of Portugal it's a Simbalino. We have: Café, Bica or Simbalino, descafeinado, capuchino, nexpresso, etc. Also in one zone of Brazil the Rapariga can be a prostitute as can be a normal girl, didn't have just a negative context.
How since 1975 Portugueses have soap opera brazilians as brazilian channels you can use the slangs of Brazil and speak normaly the portugueses will understand you at least almost of them even if they haven't sutdies, but probably if we speak with you in slangs how you don't have to much of variant European you don't will understand.
