some doubts

1 Insuring private or public property is a standard practice in the most countries in the world.

2 It's not uncommon to hear that a shipping company has made a claim for the cost of salvaging a sunken ship

3 During the party the enormous pie dish where they had the party on capsized and sank in the seven feet of water

4 By working at a tremendous speed,, the men managed to get the dish on to the dry land before the wave return

1

the bigger the risk an insurance company takes, the more you will have to pay as a premium

the bigger the risk an insurance company takes, the higher premium you will have to pay

I don't get why in the first sentence more is a more suitable word while higher is in the second sentence

Three men dived repeatedly into the water

Three men dived many a time/ time and tme into the water

I thought many a time meant the same as repeatedly and time and time and it turned out it didn't not.

For one agonizing moment, the dish was perched precariously on the bank of the canal, but it suddenly overbalanced and slid back into the water.

Between painful and frightening, which word would a more proper choice in the place of agonizing in the last sentence

could u elaborate the usage of "part of"

June 27, 2015

This idyllic pastoral scene is the only part of the picture.

If you used "the" in this sentence, it would be incomplete. "The" would require more details.

"This idyllic pastoral scene is the only part of the picture we will ever see." (Maybe because the farmers in this region are very protective and so do not allow outsiders to visit.)

Without any explanation, it must be an indefinite description, so "the" is not appropriate.

Another way to think about it:

”只是(照片)的一个部分“ => no "the" 。 。 。 "only a part of (something)"

”就是(我们能看得到的照片)的一个部分“ => "the" 。。。 "the only part (that we can see)".

I will respond over several days as there is a lot to discuss in this question. You may have better luck if you post your questions individually instead of all your questions together.

The

1. Correct.

"The" can modify "most" when it means "最多”, not when it means "多半儿“.

2. Incorrect.

What kind of cost is being discussed? The specific cost of salvaging a sunken ship.

3. Correct.

The seven feet of water is here an indefinite water. For contrast, you would need "the" if they had been more specific about which water: ". . . in the seven feet of water of the Tokamak River."

4. Correct.

This is the same reasoning as #3.
