Here is an example of putting a word together

ㅎ = h
ㅐ = ae (ay)
ㅁ = m
ㅂ = b
ㅓ = eo (aw)
ㄱ = g
ㅓ = eo (aw)

Put them together and you get 햄버거 which is pronounced 'haembeogeo' (hamburger)

How I learned to read and write hangul is like this:
First find a sheet that tells you which sound each letter makes
(The one I used was a little be like this http://koreanlanguagecourses.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/korean-language-alphabet.gif)

- Read through it a few times first paying attention to what sound each letter makes
- Cover up the English with your hands, just looking at the Korean letter, try to guess what sound it makes
- Remove your hand and see if you got it right
- If you got it right, great! If you got it wrong, try again!
- Repeat until you start to recognise and rememeber what sound each letter makes.
- Once you feel comfortable with this, practice reading some words and sentences, even if you don't understand them yet, just for reading fluency practice.

- This time, cover up the Korean letter, and just looking at the English letter, try to remember what the Korean symbol looked like and draw it yourself. Then uncover the Korean letter to see if you got it right.
- Repeat until you can draw all of the symbols from memory!
- Practice writing some Korean words that you know e.g 안녕하세요!

Making your own flash cards is also useful for this. (Korean symbol on one side, and English equivalent on other side)
Hope this helps! :)
