Hi, has anyone overcome their tackle with communication barrier when meeting the unknown/new visual signer (Sign language - ASL, BSL, etc) in person?

Such as fear? exciting? embarrassing? avoiding? Is body language mandatory? Or is International sign language better to start with? Can you cope with mis-understanding conversation?
